The ancestors of today’s Little Shell Tribe are first documented being in the land now known as the State of Montana as early as 1692 guiding Henry Kelsey of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In the 1730s, as part of the Nehiyaw Pwat Confederacy (i.e, Cree Assinboine, aka, Iron Alliance) ancestral Little Shell peoples traded guns and metal materials to the Blackfoot Confederacy in their fight with the Shoshone. We have resided in Montana in unbroken lineage since the 1780s.
